New emergency stranding in the Adriatic
In the last 2 days there are 18 turtles stranded and recovered along the Emilia Romagna and Marche coasts.
In the last 2 days up to now there are 18 turtles recovered from Ravenna to Ancona, (Lido di Savio, Cesenatico, Rimini, Riccione, Cattolica, Pesaro, Fano, Senigallia, Falconara Marittima) that are added to the same number already in the course of winter, and it is feared that the number will continue to increase.
The volunteers of Fondazione Cetacea Onlus, which manages the Riccione Center, have been mobilizing in the last hours both for the recovery of the specimens and the conferral to the Center and to support the staff in the first treatment of the hospitalized animals. At first superficial analysis all the hospitalized specimens have common characteristics: they are almost all very young specimens of Caretta caretta whose dimensions are around 20-30 centimeters of carapace, strongly debilitated and presenting the symptoms of a syndrome unfortunately sadly known as, cold stunning, hypothermia.
For now it is believed that the phenomenon of these days is linked to the important thermal changes that have occurred in the last period: the turtles, which with rising water temperatures had risen Adriatic from the south to the north, were surprised by the the arrival of the perturbations that caused the temperatures to collapse, causing the lowering of their vital functions, making them catatonic.
