Socio-economic impact assessment of the introduction of low impact fishing systems

Report finale dell'Azione D3, dopo analisi ad hoc dei questionari compilati durante la fase di diffusione dai pescatori.

Final evaluation report of the diffusion of low impact systems

In summary, the main results obtained with the mitigation devices spread to fishermen.

Final report on the use of circular hooks

The report contains the results obtained by the use circular hooks. The reduction in turtle bycatch in longline fisheries was around 30%.

Final report on the use of TEDs

The report contains the results obtained by the use of TEDs. The reduction in turtle bycatch in bottom trawls was total.

Final report on the use of light deterrents

The report contains the results obtained by the use of lights (UV LED). The reduction in turtles bycatch in gillnets was total.

Third Periodic report on the diffusion of bycatch reduction devices

At the end of the third year of dissemination, 175 fishing campaigns were carried out with circular hooks (out of 250 foreseen) for Action C1, 16 sea trials sessions with TED (out of 38 campaigns at sea) for Action C2, 49 sea trials with the pots (out of 60 provided) and 31 sea trials with the LEDs (out of the 60 provided) for Action C3.

Second Periodic report on the diffusion of bycatch reduction devices

In the second year of sBRDs diffusion, 42 fishing cruises with circular hooks were carried out for a total of 76 (out of 250 planned) for Action C1, 6 test sessions at sea for a total of 10 (out of 38 campaigns at sea) for Action C2, 20 sessions with fish pot for a total of 42 (out of 60 predicted) and 6 tests with LEDs for a total of 17 (out of 60 expected) for Action C3. The mitigation devices developed in the course of the project have so far allowed to obtain the set targets to reduce accidental catches of sea turtles and not to adversely affect commercial catches.

First periodic report on the diffusion of bycatch reduction devices

Since June 2015, the phase of diffusion of BRDs into professional fishing (longline, trawl and passive nets) has begun, which has provided a first set of sea monitorings with observers on board of commercial vessels to study real effectiveness of the proposed devices. During the first year of diffusion phase (Action C), 34 sea cruises were valid for Action C1 (24, Unimar; 10, AMP Pelagie Islands), 4 for Action C2 (CNR-ISMAR) and 33 for Action C3 (Lights and fish pots, CNR-ISMAR).

First periodic report on the spread of the mitigation tools

The monitorings carried out during diffusion phase (actions C1, C2 and C3) are the subject of work for the Action D1, which has as main purpose to evaluate the mitigation devices in terms of effectiveness of the reduction of bycatch and fishing performance. This document is the "first periodic report on the spread of the mtigation tools," which is based on monitorings carried out in the period July-December 2015 by the observers of the CNR-ISMAR of Ancona for trawling and gill nets and AMP Islands Pelagie for longliners.

Technical report on the development and test of new type of pot

Gillnet fisheries are the most popular traditional fishing along the Italian coast and the Mediterranean, and is the predominant activity of small-scale fisheries. In this regard, the decision to propose an alternative gear to gillnets has fallen on another type of traditional gear: the fish pot.

Technical report on the development and test of visual deterrent (Led-UV)

The study of appropriate mitigation devices might be a good solution to reduce the rates of bycatch and mortality for individuals of C. caretta, registered annually in the Mediterranean Sea. Unfortunately mitigation measures ready to be taken in gill net fisheries are few, and their implementation is not easy and / or the positive effects are not always ensured. The decision to use special visual deterrents to apply to gillnets was inspired by the experimentation carried out by Wang et al. 2013, since in Mediterranean any type of mitigation device was never experienced.
